Playgroup is not for wusses.

Last year, my sister-in-law and I decided we were tired of wishing for a group of girlfriends.  We had talked several times about how it is hard to make relationships in a small town full of life-long friends.  It not that people are mean.  It's just that people are creatures of comfort.  Meeting and befriending new people is not always comfortable nor natural.  It's easy to have a good talk with someone.  It's hard to form those good long-lasting friendships.

In the spirit of desperation and a lack of fear of rejection, we did it.  We started a playgroup.  We invited a few of the moms that we knew and told them to invite moms that they knew.  It started out as a really nice time with some really great girls.  We always had fun and our kids loved it.  But as all things do, it grew.  We've had some people come and some people go.  But there is a good core group of girls that have been there most weeks.  Here are some of our sweet kids.

In the past year we have gone from just some nice girls with sweet kids to actual friends!  It is just what my SIL and I hoped for.  And guess what...we have room for more.  We don't ever want to be a closed group.  In fact, just last week, we had a new mom join us for playgroup.  I had met her at a park and it turned out that she knew one of the other moms in our group.  We invited her to come, and she did!  She and her kids fit in like they had been there from the beginning.

We had our first real mom's night out last night.  Seven of our girls came, including our newest member.  We also have a mommy who is preggo with her first. (She didn't get to leave her kid at home.)  We are all ages, we go to different churches, we even have some different ideas about how to raise kids.  But none of that matters.  We love each other!

But you can't be a wuss to be a part of our playgroup.  You have to be able to handle conversations about childbirth, potty training, breastfeeding, and yes folks...poop, lots and lots of poop.  We do tell stories and laugh ourselves sick about life-saving marmots, neurotic bottle-fed goats, 101 ways to marinate chicken, and husband antics.  And every now-and-then we can get Amy to gag.  Its really great.  But you have to be able to hang with our loudness our honesty and Jill's dirty looks!  She won't give 'em unless you deserve 'em.  (Love you Jill. :) Please still make me a hat.)  You have to be able to look past a dirty house, a snotty nose, or my lack of style.  We are not perfect but we have a perfect group!  See...

I was trying to get a pic of the whole car but ended up getting just these 3 girls.  It was too cute not to post!

We had a blast together last night! We stayed out so late that several of our husbands called to ask if we were drinking or if we needed to be bailed out.  I love all of you girls and can't wait for the next one!

Remembering...

I posted this one year ago this week.  It is amazing to me that she has been gone a year.  I know this past 12 months has been so hard and full of unexpected feelings, reactions and heartaches.  I love you girls so much and pray that the healing continues.  Your mama was a special lady.  I miss her sweet face.  Much peace and love today...

This week the world suffered a most tragic loss. Janet Brown, my sweet Michelle's mama, died in surgery after unexpected heart trouble. I have to say, I did not get to spend enough time with Janet during the time I knew her. Our visits were a birthday party or a Discovery Center day here and there. But the times that I was able to share with her left a lasting warm feeling in my heart. She was the ultimate mama. I'm sure there were times when I held her hugs just a little too long because they felt cushy, soft and familiar. She made me feel as welcome as if I were her own. (I do kinda look like I fit with her girls!) She treated my babies with the patience and tenderness of a grandma. And she even bought me donuts a few times!

I think the most honorable thing about Janet is spoken most perfectly through her girls. They are beautiful, kind and caring people. They love to laugh, talk and reminisce. They love their babies and can be the protective mama bear or the silly mama clown. (or Aunt Rachel!) They hold fast to their convictions and live life to serve. That is truly "Janet style".

I know the family's pain is great. I am missing her so and I only got to spend a few years with her. I know this wound will never heal. She has left a void and always will be remembered. There will be the "I wish mom was here" times and the "I just need my mama now" times. I can't even imagine how hard this journey will be. But we who are in the faith know that Janet is telling us she will see us in a minute. She is not sad, she is dancing and worshiping and seeing the things the rest of us dream for. But for those of us left here on Earth to continue our journeys, she has left us better for knowing her and so sad to not have her with us.

Michelle, Carrie and Rachel, I love you girls and am praying God's peace for you. You girls are precious to me.

Meeting friends at Target.

I wouldn't advise it. It could be dangerous. However, it did work out great for me! It's funny. I can't imagine meeting her in any other way. Our friendship has never been "normal". I mean that in a good way! So because I told you I would share, here is our story...

Matt and I were in Target one day with Jolie, who was 2 and Asher, who was 6 months old. We were shopping around for nothing in particular when a sweet and handsome little boy, who I thought to be at least 3 or maybe 4, ran around the corner. We smiled at him as his mother came walking, (well, waddling) around the corner. She was VERY pregnant and looked kind of exhausted. Being in the Texas Panhandle where there are no strangers, we began to talk. As we talked my little girl and her little boy, who I found out was actually just a giant 2-year-old, began to play together. I instantly felt a connection with this clam yet weary mommy. But what really got my attention was how our kids played together. There was no fussing or fighting or drama. These babies were taking turns and being kind to each other. That was big for being two-year-olds!

I can't even remember what we talked about. I am sure it was something about babies and maybe a little about what our husbands were into. But all I know is that we connected.

The story could have ended there. I would have had a lovely conversation with a nice girl and went on about my business. Lucky for me, it didn't end there. Michelle and I, though we never mentioned it to each other, were both very lonesome for friends. So, as we said good bye, I kept the warm feeling of our conversation in my heart as we finished our shopping. We had a few things to pay for and so we headed to the front. When I pulled out my wallet to pay, I saw my new friend at the register across from us. She happened to be checking out at the same time. We looked at each other and laughed. Then, as we gathered our stuff to go, Matt noticed that she was struggling to carry out some big tubs so he offered to help her out to her car. We walked out together listening to our silly little kiddos talk to each other.

We exchanged a few more words as I stopped at my car. Matt left me to load the kids and followed her to her car. Turns out, she was parked right across from us! We laughed again at the coincidence. Matt loaded her tubs and said good bye. I was sitting in the car watching with the warm feeling still in my heart. Matt got in the car and began to pull out. I stopped him. Then I asked, "Do you think she would think that I was weird if I asked for her number." I had never asked a girl for her number before.

Matt said, "Why would she think you are weird?" Apparently he was quite comfortable with the whole asking for numbers thing.

"I don't know. She might think I'm desperate." I whined.

"You are desperate. Just go ask her." Matt said. He was right. I needed someone kindred. I had been a lonesome mom for too long. I needed a friend. So before she could get away, I ran over to her and said something awkward like, "I think you're cool, wanna hang out?" To my surprise, she was just as happy as I was! She said that she had been kicking herself for not asking for my number. I relaxed a little, got her number and gave her a hug goodbye. It was simple, and sweet. God had been gracious to us. He had bought us together in a unique way at the perfect time.

In the months that followed we had a hard time connecting. She had a baby, I had some medical issues. Her husband was immersed in his job as a youth pastor, mine was working shift work. It was dang hard to start up this friendship. But after a slow start, we began getting our kiddos together regularly. It was SO MUCH FUN! Our kids still got along great and we had so much in common. (Though we are very different.) We always joke about how, in the beginning, I thought that she was secretly a single mom. For the first couple of weeks she kept telling me that I would meet her husband. Then she would have some great excuse as to why he could not show up this day or that day. It was all very fishy.

Finally, at Joshia's 3rd b-day party, we met the elusive John.  I think he was afraid of us.  There was very little eye contact and just one or two grunts of hello.  Over the course of the evening, John and Matt played Chucky Cheese games with the kids and apparently did a bit of bonding.  (They are now as good of friends as Michelle and I.)  After the party they invited us to their house for awhile.  We accepted and the rest is history!

We have been through lots together.  Sickness, job losses and changes, homeschooling, two-year-olds, the lost of a parent, the loss of a child, work troubles, church troubles, angry pregnancies (sorry chelley) and life-changing choices.  We have cried together, argued, cooked for each other, cared for each others kids, given each other space and forced one another to talk.  There has never been another friend who has given me as much grace or as much grief!  She doesn't let me get away with anything.  She makes me challenge what I believe and think twice about things I say.  It's a sharpening relationship.  It's a safe and familiar relationship.

Our lives have given over to the business of children and the grasping at these little ones who are trying to grow up.  We both have a hard time leaving our families.  So we don't get to see each other as much as we did before.  But when we do get to see each other, we cherish our time.  One day, our families will need us less and we will need each other more.  John and Matt will go to the canyon for a hike.  Michelle and I will head to the coffee shop to look at magazines and talk about life.  There will always be something to talk about or to talk through.

God, thank you for bringing me this friendship.  I know this was your plan.  You have enter-twined our families lives so that we could leave if we tried.  Thank you for this like-minded family who helps to make our journey more interesting.  Bless them in their future and cover them with your Spirit here in the present.  And Lord, thank you for using an ordinary store to begin a very un-ordinary relationship.

We love you crazies!  For every one else, I would love to hear about where you met your best friend.  Everyone has a story.  Tell it to us!

More fall fun.

There was so much to do on the farm that I had to dedicate another blog to it. This is the actual apple tour part of the day.

This was our sweet ride. Sweet hay ride that is! We kinda loaded it down.

It was beautiful!

Grumpy Guts

Frowny faces.

Cool snake skin!

The apples were very crisp and fresh.

Very, very crisp and fresh.

Levi was leading the tour to the apples! "Come on guys!!"

"Levi, you are so silly!"

Pesach Seder

My family and I, since September, have been part of a group in our church that is studying the Torah. Now the Torah is a Jewish text. It is fundamental to the Jewish faith. But it is also fundamental to the Christian faith in being the very word of God and the first five books in our Bible. In studying Torah and the Jewish foundations of our faith, we have discovered the Feasts of the Lord. These are times during the year that the Lord has set apart for certain purposes. This time of year is set apart for the Passover or Pesach and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Though thought of as a "Jewish thing", it was commanded by God to be celebrated every year as a remembrance of the Israelites deliverance from Egypt. To believers of Messiah, the Pesach is a time for us remember His sacrifice on the cross. Both were miracles of God and both are salvation stories. To attend a Messianic Pesach Seder is to understand how beautifully and completely the Old Testament foreshadowed and prophesied of Messiah. If you ever have a chance to attend one, I would recommend it! This is the 3rd one we have been to and it just gets better every year! Here are some pictures.

I know they look sweet as heck but watch out!!!! (Zaddok and Judah)

They got to check for Elijah but ran to the wrong door so I was not prepared for the pic! BTW, he wasn't there.

That was just a peak into our night last night!

Company clean

Have you ever though, "Gee, I need to host a jewelry party"? I don't know what possessed me but I am sooooooo glad that I did! We had a blast. All of the cleaning and cooking and kicking my family out of the house was totally worth it. And after the fact, I have reconnected with friends, got some really sweet bling and my house is really company clean. You know company clean don't you? It's when you clean things that no one is going to look at because we women think that people (other women) are going to judge us if we have a cobweb in the corner of the attic closet or dirt under the mudroom rug. Crazy? Maybe. What is funny is that most everyone that came to the party has been to my house on a regular day and has seen how we really live. What made me think that my house had to be perfect for a group of my friends that know the truth about me? I am a closet slob. I really love to have a clean house but just can't seem to find it more important than the rest of life! So I will reside in my fairly clean house. And if some of you would please come and visit sometime so that I can get my house company clean a few times a year, that would be great. Thanks.

Here are some pics from my party!

That is Amanda. The most fab jewelry lady. And so sweet too!

This is the part where we eat.

Beans and Cornbread finally!

And it was gooooood! I am really trying to lose the post baby pounds. It is a slow and tedious process(the 10 pounds of homemade toffee I ate at Christmas did not help my cause.) But beans and cornbread hit the spot and are very good for you! Well, mine was good for me. Matt put a half cup of butter on his cornbread. It looked like icing on a cake. Plus he put cheese in his beans. I put onions in mine. It is just not fair. He stays fit and trim while I remain (only slightly really) rounded. He gets to eat those yummy Reeces trees from Christmas and I have to grin over a cup of coffee. (For those who are not familiar with my coffee replacement diet, it is really very self-explanatory. Replace everything tempting, snacky and delish with a cup of coffee. It is very effective.) Enough about my miraculously svelte hubby.

Okay, I just have to say:

If that doesn't make your reproductive system go pitter patter I just don't know what will. Anyhow...

Today was an "I'm leaving as soon as Matt gets home" kind of day. Not that the kids were naughty or stressful, I just get that urge from time to time. I begin to feel caged. Winter is just so hard. The kids get ornery (I had to look that one up) and I get grumpy.

To fend off the crazies, I did a craft with the kids. We painted and stickered little cardboard trinket boxes. It was time-consuming and the kids really got into it. Now we have these sweet hand-painted boxes that will probably end up crushed or under the bed. How many things have we lost to crushings or the under-the-bed, time space continuum? One can only imagine. At least they had fun making them. Tomorrow we have a play date for the boys and cousins coming over. Then in the evening we have our annual Mullins/Emmitt crud we don't want anymore exchange, oh, I mean white elephant gift exchange. What should we cook for dinner? Any ideas? Post a comment with dinner or munchies we could have for our New Year bash. I want something easy. See you all in 2010!
